At LUUMI we’re trying to deliver plastic free products to people that want to help Unplastic the World! While developing and making our products from 100% pure platinum silicone is a big part of eliminating plastics from our oceans, it doesn’t stop there - we’re mindful of using less plastic through the entire LUUMI process: development, creation, sales and delivery.
Here are some ways that LUUMI is using less plastic within our packaging process:
We don’t overpackage our products to inflate their value.
With e-commerce on the rise, there has been an increase in plastic packaging that is making its way to our oceans. Everything at LUUMI is simply pulled together using as little packaging as possible to reduce our footprint.
Check out Amazon’s Frustration Free Packaging Program. Over the past 10 years, their packaging initiatives have eliminated more than 244,000 tons of packaging materials, avoiding 500 million shipping boxes, and reduced packaging waste by 16%!
We use coating free craft paper with no plastic windows.
There are some interesting things happening out there right now in terms of packaging. Paper-based packaging has seen an increase over the last year, likely in response to anti-plastic movements to keep plastics out of the environment.
Some of the benefits of this type of packaging are: it’s easier to open, it’s aesthetically pleasing to customers, and it’s naturally renewable, recyclable and compostable. You can read more about the benefits of paper-based packaging here in this interesting article by Packaging Insights!
We don’t use staples, glue, plastic or ink.
All of these items negatively impact the environment. When packaging up our orders we keep it simple and are constantly striving to find ways to eliminate the use of plastic and other materials that are harmful to the environment.
According to an article by Energy Central, the plastics used in printer cartridges are composed of an engineering grade polymer that has a very slow decomposition rate (we’re talking 450 to 1000 years!), and printer ink can leak into the environment contributing to pollution.
In the future, our goal at LUUMI is to switch from using mailing labels to using laser etched envelopes! Stay tuned, as we take you through our journey of switching to laser engraving. Until then, let’s keep trying to rid the world of plastic!
